What Michael Carrick said to Paul Pogba before captaining Man Utd

Friday’s Manchester United captain Paul Pogba has revealed what Michael Carrick said to him before taking the captaincy this season.

The Frenchman took up the role due to Antonio Valencia’s injury for the Premier League opener against Leicester and made a scoring start to the campaign as United beat Leicester City 2-1.

Pogba, 25, is coming off the back of an excellent performance in the 2018 World Cup, in which he helped lead his country to victory, scoring as they beat Croatia 4-2 in the final in Moscow.

The former Juventus midfielder had his detractors last season, where he struggled for form at times despite ending the term with 10 league assists and has endured rumours of a rift between himself and manager Jose Mourinho. But this time out, Pogba will be hoping to kick on from his international exploits and find that consistency while leading his teammates on the pitch.

Pogba revealed that it was his fellow players that helped to convert him into a captain and he hopes to repay them on the pitch.

“It is a role you have to do. I think it’s with the players and all your team-mates,” said Pogba.

“They put you and make you convertible to wear this (the captain’s armband). They make you proud to wear this.”

Michael Carrick, an influential figure who is currently on the coaching staff at Old Trafford after ending his playing career this summer, was also instrumental in giving Pogba the confidence to take the arm, as the Frenchman revealed: “Even [Michael] Carrick came to talk to me and told me that he wanted me to wear it because of the history because what I give to the club, I give to the people, what I do for the fans, for the young players in the academy and stuff like that.

“They look up to me is what he said. Obviously, you want to give something back for them and on the pitch, I always try to be thankful to the fans and to my team-mates.”

Manchester United got their season off to a winning start when they beat Leicester City on Friday and the travel to Brighton next weekend hoping to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League.
