Liverpool’s £13m summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri turned down José Mourinho’s Manchester United in favour of signing for Liverpool this summer, claim Swiss publication Blick.
Shaqiri penned a long-term contract at Liverpool after the Reds chose to trigger the £13m release clause in his contract at Stoke City.
Jürgen Klopp believes Shaqiri will provide excellent support for the Reds’ attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberton Firmino. The Swiss international made his competitive debut for Liverpool in their 4-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday.
A report in Switzerland claims to have information on the other offers that Shaqiri received in the summer, with the 26-year-old said to have rejected a move to Manchester United as well as a host of other Premier League clubs.
They claim that West Ham and Southampton were the other clubs interested in signing Shaqiri, but talks never opened, with Liverpool keen to persuade the winger to choose Anfield as his next destination.
Did Shaqiri make the right choice?
The former Bayern Munich man couldn’t have got off to a much better start to life with his new club, after scoring an overhead kick against Manchester United on his debut, perhaps an extra kick in the teeth for Mourinho?
Jürgen Klopp has already expressed his excitement at the prospect of working together with Shaqiri and believes he is able to play in a number of roles in his team.
In his first interview with the club, Shaqiri said that working with Jürgen Klopp was one of the main reasons why he chose to sign for Liverpool.
“I know the coach from Germany, when he was at Dortmund. We played against each other – me with Bayern Munich – and they were always big games.
“That was a big point for me to come here, because of the coach. I love his football, how he plays and how he manages a team. I was always an admirer of his so I’m happy to reunite with him.”
