Michael Owen believes Manchester City or Liverpool will win the Champions League this season and has backed English clubs to once again become a dominant force in European football.
Liverpool reached the final of the competition last season but were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid, meaning English clubs have now won just one of the last 10 editions of the tournament – Chelsea back in 2012.
However, Liverpool got off to a strong start in this season’s campaign, beating French champions PSG 3-2 on Tuesday night, and Owen thinks it will be them or City who will take the European crown this time around.
“Our (England’s) teams are really at it,” Owen told BT Sport (via Football 365). “I really fancy two teams this year, either Manchester City or Liverpool.
“I really think it’s going to be an English team. I think we (English teams) will be here to stay for a long period of time as well.”
After their cup final-heartbreak last season, Owen, who scored 158 goals in 297 games for Liverpool, also believes Jurgen Klopp’s side are destined to win a trophy this season.
The 38-year-old added: “They [Liverpool] are tailor-made for Europe, playing brilliant in the Premier League. I am sure they are going to win a trophy this year.”
While Liverpool couldn’t have wished for a better start after their triumph over PSG, Manchester City kick off their Champions League campaign with a home tie against another French side, Lyon, on Wednesday night.
