I want Jasper Cillessen to stay at Barcelona – Ernesto Valverde

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde hopes Jasper Cillessen remains with the club.

The 29-year-old Dutch goalkeeper, who has effectively been Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s understudy since joining the La Liga giants from Ajax in 2016, recently spoke about his desire for regular playing time.

To date, the majority of his appearances have come in the cup competitions, and though ter Stegen is Barça’s number one, Valverde appreciates Cillessen whilst understanding the predicament that he faces.

“My idea is to have two good goalkeepers, the two we have now, Marc and Jasper,” he told reporters (via FourFourTwo).

“It’s true that [Cillessen has] not played as much as Marc, but that’s what being a goalkeeper can be like.

“He knows what I think. I don’t think he will be hard work if he stays – we are very happy with his professionalism and his attitude. We hope he stays with us and is happy here.”

Cillessen at Barça

Since joining Barcelona, the Nijmegen-born footballer, whose present contract expires in June 2021, has featured across 21 matches in two seasons with 17 of those appearances coming in the Copa del Rey.

From those outings, Cillessen, who has 40 international caps under his belt with the Netherlands, has kept 11 clean sheets (0.52 per game).

Cillessen, so far, has made two league outings, the latest coming in Barça’s penultimate home match of last season – a game that saw Valverde’s men run out 5-1 winners against Villarreal.

Barcelona next take on Sevilla in the Supercopa de Espana final on August 12.
