Napoli stadium looking more and more of a toilet – De Laurentiis

Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis has described the club’s stadium as ‘looking like a toilet’.

The Serie A club currently play at the Stadio San Paolo which is under renovation with the work expected to be completed prior to the start of the 2018/19 season.

However, work hasn’t progressed to the standards necessary according to De Laurentiis, who is appalled at the state of the stadium ahead of the club’s first campaign under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

De Laurentiis has hit out at the Metropolitan Council of Naples for the current state of the ground, comparing Napoli’s home to a toilet.

“If I were at the head of the council, we would have no financial problems,” the 69-year-old told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“I’m tired of saying that San Paolo is falling by the wayside and they’re not doing what they can to make it happen. Instead of improving it, the stadium looks more and more like a toilet.”

De Laurentiis also hit out at the head of the Municipality cabinet, Attilio Auricchio, who, according to the chairman, has squandered roughly £22m to date so far.

“I’m used to Auricchio’s lies,” he added.

“Auricchio has to explain to me why, for eight years now, the San Paolo is increasingly a toilet.

“The councillor for sport, who I like, can’t go against him and therefore is also forced to be a liar. They don’t have to tell lies.

“If I’d been in that state of financial distress I’d have resigned.”

Napoli will be hoping to go one better this campaign, which they begin against Lazio on August 18, after finishing second in Serie A behind league rivals Juventus last term.
