Inter Milan manager Luciano Spalletti has confirmed his club are putting together a deal to sign Real Madrid star Luka Modric.
Modric, 32, won the Golden Ball at this summer’s World Cup after several key performances in Croatia’s midfield at the quadrennial tournament.
Inter have been chasing the playmaker all summer, but Real Madrid, who have already lost star man Cristiano Ronaldo, insist that they will not allow the Croatia international to leave unless his £668 million release clause is met.
However, Spalletti is confident Inter can complete the move.
“The club has shown they work in a coherent and serious fashion,” Spalletti told reporters (via Four Four Two). “They are trying to put everything in place that we consider to be right.
“It’s certain a player of that calibre would be important for anyone, let alone for us.
“I continue to dream along with the fans, but we have everything needed to handle anything that happens.”
Signing Modric would cap off a successful transfer window for the Nerazzurri, who are looking to improve upon last term’s fourth-place and reestablish themselves as serious contenders in the league and Europe.
So far, Inter have reinforced their squad with seven signings, including Radja Nainggolan from Roma and Lautaro Martinez from Racing Club.
Luka Modric has been sensational for Real Madrid over the years and with rumours that Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale may still leave the Santiago Bernabéu before this summer’s window closes, they could be reluctant to let him go.
Modric only managed one goal for Los Blanco last season in the league, but his lack of goals are overcome by his extraordinary composure in midfield, where he enjoyed a paw completion rate of 90% in La Liga.
Real Madrid take on Roma in a pre-season friendly before going head-to-head with Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final. They will host Getafe for their opening game of the 2018-19 La Liga campaign on August 19.
