Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed Marcus Rashford has had his eye on wearing the No.10 shirt for the club for some time.
The 20-year-old wore the famous number 1o during United’s last pre-season match against German champions Bayern Munich, which the Bundesliga winners won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Javi Martinez.
Rashford has already established himself as one of the most promising forwards in English football having broken through the ranks at Old Trafford and with the England national team.
His ability has convinced United boss Mourinho to give the iconic squad number to the striker, with the Portuguese admitting that Rashford has been interested in claiming it for his own for some time.
Speaking to MUTV Mourinho said: “He wanted it.
“He always wanted it. Of course, he respected the big [Wayne] Rooney and then Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] wanted to have it. Of course, he was in the shadow, waiting for the opportunity and now the shirt is empty.
“It’s something fantastic for the kid, let’s give the shirt to him.”
Rashford follows in a long line of ex-Manchester United heroes who have worn the same number.
In recent years, the likes of Teddy Sheringham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rooney and Ibrahimovic have all been given the honour of becoming United’s number 10.
The number comes with a certain expectation but Rashford undoubtedly has the potential to ensure he becomes the next legend people will be talking about in years to come.
United take on Leicester City on August 10 at Old Trafford in what is the first game of the 2018/19 Premier League season.
