Lothar Matthäus believes Niklas Süle has now become Bayern Munich’s strongest centre-back.
Süle joined Bayern from Hoffenheim last summer and went on to make 42 appearances in all competitions last season as the Bavarians secured their sixth consecutive domestic crown.
Having partnered Mats Hummels in Bayern’s 5-0 win over Frankfurt in the German Super Cup, Süle then retained his place for their 3-1 win over his former side, Hoffenheim, in the opening fixture of the league season – this time partnering Jérôme Boateng.
Hummels and Boateng have collected 139 caps for Germany between them, but Matthäus believes it is Süle, who currently has 12 caps for Die Mannschaft, who will be the mainstay at the back this season for the reigning Bundesliga champions.
The former Bayern and Inter Milan midfielder told Sky Sports, as reported by Bulinews: “I believe that Boateng has shown his weaknesses in the past months and years, at the World Cup and now in the first game.
“For me, Süle is the only centre-back certain to start. He is the most stable, he is fast, physically strong and confident.
“I believe Süle is certain to play the important games, and then he will have either Boateng or Hummels beside him.”
Süle vs. Hummels vs. Boateng
Despite Matthäus seeing Süle as the top Bayern centre-back candidate, it was Mats Hummels that played the most minutes in the Bundesliga last season, racking up 2,213 minutes compared to Süle’s 1,919 and Boateng’s 1,644.
Hummels also led his would-be partners in terms of tackles made per 90 minutes (2.5 vs. 1.6 and 1.4 respectively) whilst leading the entire Bayern team for interceptions with 2.2 per 90 minutes.
Boateng, who is reportedly keen to leave, ranked highest for clearances per 90 minutes as well as accurate long balls.
Matthäus’ pick rarely ranks bottom of the three in any metric, whilst also boasting the best aerial duel win-rate and tackle success rate.
Bayern and Süle will have the chance to make it two wins from two in their Bundesliga title defence when they travel to Stuttgart on September 1st.
