Gennaro Gattuso unhappy with current quality of Chelsea loanee Tiemoue Bakayoko

AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso has come out and criticised Chelsea loanee Tiemoue Bakayoko after his side were defeated 3-2 against Napoli on Saturday.

The Rossoneri led 2-0 but were pegged back thanks to two goals from Piotr Zielinski and a winner from Belgium international Dries Mertens.

The Milan manager was clearly unhappy at the nature of the capitulation, and in particular, with the defensive play of Chelsea loanee Bakayoko.

The Frenchman was brought on to help Milan protect their lead after Napoli pulled a goal back but he did not have the desired impact as the home side came storming back.

As reported by the Standard, Gattuso aired his frustration following the game:

“Bakayoko has to learn how to get the ball,” Gattuso said. “We must work correctly. It will not be easy.

“One week is not enough to remove the defects of a player. I would have preferred to be managing older, more experienced club players.”

The 24-year-old joined on-loan from Chelsea this summer for a reported loan fee of around £4.5m but, according to Gattuso, he still has a lot to work on.

The player is not without experience having made 29 appearances in the Premier League last season and played over 60 Ligue 1 games with Rennes and Monaco, but he failed to win a single tackle during the time he was on the pitch.

He also missed a presentable opportunity with the scores level at 2-2 to put Milan back in front.

There is hope that AC Milan can have a good season this year having made some expensive additions during the summer.

Gonzalo Higuain came in on-loan from Juventus and Samu Castillejo arrived from Villareal for £22.5m. They also signed Juve defender Mattia Caldara for £31.5m to raise expectations further, yet this result will be difficult to swallow.

Milan face another big test on Friday when they take on AS Roma at the San Siro.
