Rio Ferdinand has revealed which Manchester United centre-back transfer target is his preferred choice to join the club.
United boss Jose Mourinho has made it no secret that he is still after some more signings as we enter the final day of England’s summer transfer window.
With the Red Devils seemingly keen on improving their defence, a variety of names have been linked with a move to the Old Trafford club.
Two of those names include Leicester City and England star Harry Maguire, and Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld with the latter having just one year to go on his contract with the London club.
Former United defender Ferdinand believes that both players are fantastic potential options for Mourinho to enquire after but his preference would be to make a move for the Tottenham defender.
Speaking to reporters (via the Mirror), Ferdinand said: “Harry Maguire did great at the World Cup, but of the players potentially available he would not be my first choice.
“I would go for Alderweireld, all day long, because he is suited to the way United play.”
Maguire vs Alderweireld – who comes out on top?
Alderweireld only made 14 appearances for Spurs last season in the Premier League due to injury so it would be unfair to compare the impressive stats of Maguire to the Spurs man.
However, we can compare Alderweireld’s 16/17 season where the Belgium international played 30 matches for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Firstly, Maguire proved that he is slightly more dangerous in the opposition’s box, scoring two goals and assisting four times compared to Alderweireld’s one goal and zero assists.
Alderweireld had a slightly better pass success rate of 83% compared to the Leicester man’s 78%.
However, Maguire comes out on top in other important areas. Maguire made more interceptions than Alderweireld (47 to 26), more clearances (168 to 166) and a much better successful take on rate (85.45% to 50%) which is one of Maguire’s strongest attributes.
