Manchester City have announce the signing of Australian midfielder Daniel Arzani from their sister club Melbourne City.
The 19-year-old was the youngest player at the World Cup this summer, and made three substitute appearances for the Socceroos in the group stage.
Arzani also won the A-League’s young player of the season award last term as well as the Harry Kewell medal for the best U23 player in Australia.
But the youngster looks likely to immediately leave the club on loan this window, with City Football Group’s managing director of global football, Brian Marwood, comparing his move to that of Aaron Mooy.
“In a short period of time, Daniel has developed into one of Australia’s brightest young stars and has demonstrated the drive and raw talent required for success at the highest level,” he told the club’s official website.
“This pathway was first forged by Aaron Mooy just two years ago, and we are all delighted to see another Australian-grown talent make this move.
“The combination of City Football Group’s global football structure and the world-leading City Football Academy facilities create an environment in which this pathway can become well-trodden.”
City signed Mooy from Melbourne City in 2016 and shortly loaned him out to then-Championship side Huddersfield Town, before his move was made permanent last season after helping the Terriers win promotion to the Premier League.
According to the BBC, Celtic are expected to be Arzani’s temporary location, with the Scottish Premiership champions having until August 31 – when their window closes – to secure his signing.
Arzani played a total of 60 minutes at the World Cup for Australia across his three appearances, completing 16 of his 18 attempted passes and creating three chances.
