Chelsea have announced the signing of goalkeeper Rob Green on a free transfer with the former England number one set to provide backup to Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero.
Green, 38, spent last season at Huddersfield Town but did not make a single appearance for the Terriers with his sole game during the campaign coming for Leeds United in the League Cup last August.
The Blues have been linked with a move for a new goalkeeper with Courtois’ contract up at the end of the season and the Belgian reportedly on his way out of the club.
But in their announcement of Green, Chelsea made it clear the 38-year-old would be the third choice goalkeeper, behind the Belgian and Caballero, taking the place of Eduardo who joined Vitesse on loan this summer.

“Chelsea Football Club has today completed the signing of goalkeeper Rob Green,” a statement on the club’s official website read.
“Green joins to provide backup for Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero after leaving Huddersfield Town, where he spent last season.”
While the former Norwich City, West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper spoke of the “dramatic” circumstances surrounding his move to Chelsea.
“It has been a whirlwind 24 hours,” Green told Chelsea’s website.
“You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation.
“It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”
In a career spanning 17 years, Green has made 605 league appearances for numerous teams, including 267 in the Premier League. The goalkeeper also earned 12 caps for England and represented the Three Lions at the 2010 World Cup.
Chelsea fans react to their new signing
Given the doubt surrounding the future of Courtois, some Chelsea fans found it funny Green’s announcement included clarification he would be a backup.
Love how they had to reassure the fans that he’s joining as a backup.
