Sane is “far away from his best condition” admits Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says Leroy Sane is “far away from his best condition” with a fortnight before the new season.

The 22-year-old German forward was mercurial last season with his stunning performances earning him the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Despite his growing status, Sane failed to make Germany’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, and though he’s with City on pre-season, Guardiola feels the Essen-born footballer is not quite at his best yet.

“It depends on him. He needs more minutes, he needs to come back to his principles in terms of being aggressive without the ball,” he said (via Daily Mail).

“He has to come back. Of course he has all the talent to do that so we are happy for him to score but he is still far away from his best condition.”

Sane in Manchester

Sane joined City from boyhood club Schalke in the summer of 2016 for £42.5 m, which subsequently made him the most expensive German footballer in history.

A graduate of the Gelsenkirchen-based club’s academy, he ended an 11-year association by joining the Pep Guardiola revolution in Manchester.

Sane left having made 57 first-team appearances, scoring 13 goals and creating a further eight.

So far, he has represented City on no fewer than 86 occasions registering 23 goals and creating a further 27 for his teammates.

And he was, as mentioned, sparkling last season having contributed to 33 goals across 49 matches (scoring 14 of those himself).
