Ahead of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign, Squawka have ranked the most under-active players in the game.

The life of a third-choice ‘keeper is much like that of Prince William; you’re in line for the top spot, but two people will have to get out of the way first.

In football, third-choice ‘keepers usually get an opportunity in pre-season games, and if they play for a top club more focused on competing at the upper reaches of the Premier League, then they might get an opportunity in the League Cup.

Some clubs in the Premier League could lose their first-choice goalkeeper and their back-up, but would still have a safe pair of hands between the sticks – other clubs are not so lucky.

Here are the most luxurious Premier League third-choice ‘keepers ranked.

20. West Ham – Only have two: Lukasz Fabianski and Adrian

19.  Fulham – Only have two: Marcus Bettinelli and Fabri

18. Everton – Only have two: Jordan Pickford and Maarten Stekelenburg

17. Watford – Daniel Bachmann

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 0
Club appearances: 0
Previous clubs: Bury (loan), Ross County (loan), Wrexham (loan), Stoke City

Bachmann signed a three-year deal with Watford in July 2017 – he is yet to appear for the club.

16. Cardiff City – Brian Murphy

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 0
Club appearances: 5
Previous clubs: Manchester City, Oldham Athletic (loan), Peterborough United (loan), Swansea, Bohemians, Ipswich Town, Queens Park Rangers, Portsmouth

The 35-year-old veteran has plied his trade across all tiers of the English Football League and is a steady hand.

15.  Chelsea – Rob Green

Club appearances: 0
Previous clubs: Huddersfield Town, Leeds United, Queens Park Rangers, West Ham United, Norwich City.

Green moved to the Blues from Huddersfield Town where he failed to make a single appearance last season.

14. Wolves – Will Norris

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 0
Club appearances: 7
Previous clubs: Hatfield Town, Royston Town, Cambridge United, Braintree Town (loan)

Norris has appeared seven times for Wolves and made his league debut last season in the Championship.

13.  Man Utd – Lee Grant

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 3 (Stoke City)
Club appearances: 0
Previous clubs: Stoke City, Derby County, Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday, Oldham Athletic (loan)

Grant was brought to Old Trafford on 3 July 2018 for an undisclosed fee – it’s doubtful that he’ll get any significant game time.

12. Crystal Palace – Julian Speroni

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 11
Club appearances: 403
Previous clubs: Dundee, Platense

Speroni has been a reliable hand for Palace over the years, but with Wayne Hennessey likely to start again for Palace this season and with the introduction of new ‘stopper Vicente Guaita from Getafe, the 39-year-old could be playing his last season with the club.

11. Bournemouth – Aaron Ramsdale

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 0
Club appearances: 0
Previous clubs: Sheffield United, Chesterfield (loan)

Ramsdale played for Chesterfield last season on loan. The 20-year-old is a promising talent who has represented England at Under 18, Under 19 and Under 20 level.

10. Huddersfield – Joel Coleman

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 0
Club appearances: 14
Previous clubs: Oldham Athletic

The 22-year-old stopper cut his teeth at Boundary Park with Oldham Athletic where he made 45 appearances over three season.

9. Burnley – Anders Lindegaard

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 0
Club appearances: 0
Previous clubs: OB, Kolding (loan), Aalesund, Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion, Preston North End

A decent option for any club, Anders Lindergaard signed for Burnely on a free transfer at the beginning of last season, though he is yet to appear for the club.

8. Spurs – Paulo Gazzaniga

2017/18 Premier League appearances:  1
Club appearances: 1
Previous clubs: Rayo Vallecano (loan), Southampton, Gillingham

Gazzaniga is currently at Spurs on a five-year deal. This is the second time he has played under manager Mauricio Pochettino after their spell together at Southampton.

7. Brighton – David Button

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 0
Club appearances: 0
Previous clubs: Spurs, Gray Athletic (loan), Rochdale (loan), Bournemouth (loan), Dagenham & Redbridge  (loan), Luton Town (loan), Crewe Alexandra (loan), Shrewsbury Town (loan), Plymouth Argyle (loan), Leyton Orient  (loan), Doncaster Rovers  (loan), Barnsley (loan), Charlton Athletic, Brenford, Fulham,

The 29-year-old has spent most of his career on loan with multiple clubs in the lower tiers of the English football, but Button is a veteran of the game and a competent gloveman when needed.

6. Newcastle – Karl Darlow

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 11
Club appearances: 58
Previous clubs: Nottingham Forest, Newport County (loan) Walsall (loan)

Darlow has been a reliable hand between the sticks for the Magpies during his time with the club, but with Martin Dubravka likely to be their first-choice ‘keeper and Rob Elliot just ahead of him he may struggle for minutes this season.

5. Leicester – Eldin Jakupovic

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 2
Club appearances: 4
Previous clubs: Grasshopper, FC Thun, Lokomotiv Moscow, Olympiakos Volou, Aris, Hull City, Leyton Orient (loan)

Jakupovic arrived at Leicester last season where he has to date made four appearances. He will likely fall down the pecking order now Danny Ward has arrived from Liverpool.

 

4. Southampton Fraser Forster, Alex Mccarthy, Angus Gunn

It’s unclear what the pecking order will be at Southampton, but one thing is for certain, they’re spoilt for choice as each of these stoppers could be a club starter.

3.  Man City – Joe Hart

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 19 (West Ham United)
Club appearances: 348
Previous clubs: Shrewsbury Town, Tranmere Rovers (loan), Blackpool (loan), Birmingham City (loan), Torino (loan), West Ham United (loan)

The former England No.1 had a mixed spell with West Ham last season and his form has dipped in general since Pep Guardiola snubbed him. However, the 31-year-old is still an excellent ‘keeper and a very luxurious option to have as a third choice.

2. Arsenal – David Ospina

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 5
Club appearances: 70
Previous clubs: Atletico Nacional, Nice

Ospina’s best run in the Premier League with Arsenal was during his first season at the club in the 2014/15 season where he made 23 appearances. Since then the Colombian’s league appearances have not broke single digits, but Ospina is a ‘keeper who could start for any club, so he’ll be spoilt for choices if he decides to leave this summer.

1.  Liverpool – Simon Mignolet

2017/18 Premier League appearances: 19
Club appearances: 200
Previous clubs: Sint-Truiden, Sunderland

Mignolet has been an excellent ‘keeper for the Reds over the years and he’s made some astonishing stops along the way. He was dropped last season for Loris Karius, and with the arrival of Alisson he will be further down the hierarchy. It’s doubtful a ‘keeper of Mignolet’s quality will tolerate being No.3, but if he does decide to stay at Anfield he could well be the best third-choice ‘keeper in football history.
