Chelsea new boy Kepa Arrizabalaga ‘a great keeper’, says David Luiz

Chelsea and Brazil defender David Luiz has hailed the imminent arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, with the Blues having since completed a world-record £72m deal for the Athletic Club star.

News emerged on Tuesday afternoon that Chelsea had triggered the Spain goalkeepers release clause, as current first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois looked destined to make his dream move to Real Madrid. By that evening, both transfers were confirmed.

Jordan Pickford, Jack Butland, Kasper Schmeichel and Jan Oblak had all been linked with the club as Courtois’ replacement, but the Blues have now completed a deal that will make Kepa the most expensive goalkeeper ever, eclipsing the £67m deal that saw Alisson move to Liverpool last month.

Luiz has expressed his delight at the arrival of the Spanish goalkeeper.

Speaking after Chelsea’s final pre-season game against Lyon at Stamford Bridge, Luiz said: “[Kepa] is a great ‘keeper, that is why everybody is talking about him. The financial side – every club in the world spends money, not just Chelsea.

“The numbers don’t matter, we are happy because Chelsea are always doing the best for the club.

“When you play for Chelsea you have to think about titles, it doesn’t matter the name of the competition. We have to always try to win.

“That has to be the mentality of every single player when you play for a big club like Chelsea. We are going to fight for that.”

How are things shaping up for Chelsea ahead of the new season?

The arrival of Kepa softens the blow of losing Courtois to Real Madrid, but Chelsea’s best piece of business could perhaps be managing to keep Eden Hazard at the club.

The Galacticos have been strongly linked with a move for Hazard, but he, along with N’Golo Kante and Willian, who were at certain stages during the summer targets for Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona respectively, are now looking likely to stay at the club for another season.

Luiz added: “It’s good news. I always say Chelsea have to keep their best players and if we keep them all it will be amazing for us.”

Chelsea also tied up a loan deal for Mateo Kovacic on Wednesday night. Their deadline day is expected to be spent selling and loaning players, rather than purchasing them.
