Graeme Souness has blasted referee Anthony Taylor for not showing a red card to Watford‘s Etienne Capoue following his challenge on Crystal Palace‘s Wilfried Zaha.
Early in the game at Vicarage Road, the French midfielder challenged Zaha from behind and seemingly ran his studs down the back of the Palace winger’s legs.
And at half-time, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, Souness was very critical of Anthony Taylor for only showing Capoue a yellow card for the dangerous challenge.
He said: “He set out to nail Zaha and the referee has either bottled it or he does not understand football.
“It is 100 per cent a red card.”
Alongside Souness in the Sky studio were Jamie Redknapp and ex-Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi.
And both of Souness’ fellow pundits were equally critical of Capoue’s challenge, with Redknapp adding: “That one there is spiteful, it’s malicious, it’s so nasty.
“They’re the ones as a player that can actually really physically hurt you.”
Ameobi shared Redknapp’s sentiment, while also picking out Taylor for an apparent lack of understanding a challenge which he was well positioned to see.
He said: “That could have been season-ending, that’s how bad I think that challenge was.
“He wasn’t going for the ball, the referee is right there, I think he has to understand where the player is trying to tackle the guy and where the ball is.”
Watford v Crystal Palace was Anthony Taylor’s third game of the season – he is yet to show a red card so far.
