Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer Ben Woodburn joins Sheffield United on loan

Championship side Sheffield United have confirmed the arrival of teenager Ben Woodburn from Liverpool on a season-long loan.

Woodburn had been playing for Liverpool during the club’s pre-season tour of north-west England and the United States, but it was always the intention of manager Jurgen Klopp to send the 18-year-old out on loan to gain first-team experience.

Sheffield United fought off several Championship rivals for the highly-rated youngster including former Premier League side Aston Villa.

And, speaking on Woodburn’s arrival, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder revealed he is excited at the prospect of working with the loanee.

“Ben is a great signing for us, he is an exciting player with undoubted quality,” he told the Championship side’s official website.

“He’s been involved with Liverpool throughout their pre-season and I’m delighted they’ve trusted us with one of their outstanding young prospects, who is a full international as a teenager.

“It’s his first loan move and I’m sure it will be a great one for all parties. He makes goals and scores goals with both feet, he can play in a couple of attacking positions and gives us flexibility at the top of the pitch.”

Woodburn’s Liverpool career so far

Woodburn joined Liverpool at under-7s level and made his way through the ranks before signing his first professional in November 2016.

He would also make his first-team debut in November 2016, becoming the club’s third-youngest ever player, coming on as an injury-time substitute in a 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Woodburn scored his first goal for the club just days later in a League Cup quarter-final win over Leeds United at the age of 17 years and 45 days, breaking Michael Owen’s record of the youngest ever goalscorer for Liverpool.
