Every Premier League club’s potential breakout star of the 2018/19 season

As the new Premier League season fast approaches, all 20 sides are in a frantic race to complete their summer signings before the window shuts on 9th August.

Despite the madness that is guaranteed to unfold as the clock ticks down to deadline day, many clubs have already got some deals over the line – some proven successes in the Premier League, others more of a risk after moving from lesser leagues.

There is also a host of talented youngsters knocking on first team doors up and down the country so, who is each club’s most likely breakout star for the 2018-19 season?

Reiss Nelson

Age: 18
Nationality: English
Position(s): Forward/Winger

Reiss Nelson is one of a host of youngsters that Arsene Wenger lined up for first-team football before ending his 22-year reign as Arsenal manager. Nelson made 16 appearances for the first-team last season, including eight in the Gunners’ run to the Europa League semi-final.

Unai Emery has used the 18-year-old forward four times in pre-season and, after turning in some positive performances, could find himself in-line for more Premier League appearances this term, especially if Arsenal’s reported pursuit of a winger falls short.

Emile Smith Rowe is another to look out for, but with Nelson’s route to first-team minutes much clearer, the winger is expected to make the biggest impact.

David Brooks

Age: 21
Nationality: Welsh
Position(s): Midfielder

Warrington-born, Welsh midfielder David Brooks began his career on the books at Manchester City before heading across the Pennines to Sheffield United.

Last season was already a breakthrough one for Brooks after making 33 appearances for the Blades, scoring three goals and assisting another four, as well as picking up his first three caps for the Welsh national team.

After spending around £10million on the 21-year-old, Eddie Howe may well give Brooks a big roll in the Premier League for Bournemouth this season.

Yves Bissouma

Brighton and Hove Albion

Age: 21
Nationality: Malian
Position(s): Centre-midfielder

Despite costing Brighton a near-club-record £15m, Bissouma is a relatively unknown quantity. However, the Seagulls’ recruitment has been one the smartest in the league since their promotion and the midfielder represents yet another exciting acquisition.

Averaging 3.2 successful take-ons per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 last season, as well as 3.9 tackles, Bissouma has the makings of an all-conquering midfielder that could prove a bargain for Chris Hughton’s side.

Dwight McNeil

Burnley

Age: 18
Nationality: English
Position(s): Midfielder/forward

Since signing his first professional contract in April, Dwight McNeil has made quite an impression at Turf Moor.

Sean Dyche saw fit to include him in the matchday squad for Burnley’s final game of last season – McNeil replaced Aaron Lennon late in that game against Bournemouth – and a late winning goal in the Claret’s recent friendly win has left Dyche signing the praises of McNeil in the press. Expect big things from Burnley’s current Young Player of the Season.

Josh Murphy

Age: 23
Nationality: English
Position(s): Winger

With his twin brother, Jacob, already getting his first taste of the Premier League last season with Newcastle United, this season sees Josh Murphy get the chance to prove himself in England’s top tier.

After scoring nine goals in 39 games last season for Norwich City, Neil Warnock is believed to have spent around £11m on the talented winger. Murphy will be hoping for a big return this season as he and Cardiff try to avoid an immediate return to Championship.

Chelsea

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Age: 17
Nationality: English
Position(s): Forward

Many see the Chelsea academy system as a dead end – lots of talent coming through the ranks that will inevitably hit a giant road-block when it gets to the first team.

Try telling that to 17-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi. The England U-17 forward made four appearances in the second half of last season and has made so much of an impression during Chelsea’s pre-season that Maurizio Sarri himself advising people to remember his name.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Crystal Palace

Age: 20
Nationality: English
Position(s): Defender

Aaron Wan-Bissaka only sampled his first taste of first-team football at Palace amid their injury crisis in February 2018. He started his first match on the 25th against Tottenham Hotspur, putting in a great performance and raising a few eyebrows around Selhurst Park.

He held his place for subsequent fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester United and impressed so-much-so that he was awarded with Palace’s Player of the Month award for March.

Wan-Bissaka has been heavily involved in Roy Hodson’s pre-season preparations, he may well solidify his place in the Palace first-team this season.

Beni Baningime

Everton

Age: 19
Nationality: Congolese
Position(s): Midfielder

A robust, mobile, holding midfielder with an eye for a pass. That is one position in which Everton seem to be in short supply, and that is exactly what Beni Banigime brings to the table.

Baningime impressed with his composure during his 11 first-team appearances last season and, with Evertonians less than impressed with Morgan Schneiderlin, could get more chances in the senior side this time around.

Ademola Lookman will also be a name to follow, but with his future still undecided, you may have to tune into the Bundesliga to do so.

Ryan Sessegnon

Fulham

Age: 18
Nationality: English
Position(s): Left winger/left-back

With 23 goals in 82 games, aged just 18, you could say that Ryan Sessegnon has already had is breakthrough.

However, this season will be the exciting wide-man’s first in the Premier League and, with a host of big names seemingly queuing up for his signature, represents a massive chance for Sessegnon to prove himself at the highest level.

Philip Billing

Huddersfield Town

Age: 22
Nationality: Danish
Position(s): Midfielder

At 22-years old, it seems that it would be now or never for Philip Billing.

The Danish youth international played 22 games in all competitions last season. However, he has impressed in pre-season so far – most recently with a strong attacking display in Huddersfield’s 2-1 win over Bologna. David Wagner may well give Billing more chances this season as he looks to increase his side’s creativity.

Fousseni Diabate

Leicester City

Age: 22
Nationality: Malian
Position(s): Attacking midfielder

Fousseni Diabate only joined Leicester in January, however, the 22-year-old has already made quite an impression.

He scored twice on his debut in a 5-1 FA Cup win over Peterborough United and ended the season with 14 appearances under his belt for the Foxes. With Riyad Mahrez completing his move to Manchester City this summer, Leicester will be looking to the likes of Diabate and Demari Gray to step up in the creative department this season.

Rhian Brewster

Liverpool

Age: 18
Nationality: English
Position(s): Striker

Rhian Brewster is just 18-years-old and is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Liverpool first-team to date.

However, that has not stopped the young striker having an eventful career so far. A key feature of Steven Gerrard’s development squads before a serious knee injury, the 2017 U-17 World Cup Golden Boot winner was attracting interest from the Bundesliga such is his talent and potential.

Recently signing a new five-year deal with the Reds, however, it seems Jurgen Klopp may give the teenager a chance to demonstrate is goalscoring exploits for the first-team this season.

Phil Foden

Manchester City

Age: 18
Nationality: English
Position(s): Midfield

Much talked about Manchester City midfielder, Phil Foden, will be hoping the 2018-19 season is a big one for him.

At just 18-years-old, he has already made 10 appearances for a star-studded Manchester City side, as well as scoring 11 goals in 23 appearances for the England U17 – he was alongside Brewster in those celebrations.

It is no secret that Pep Guardiola loves a creative midfielder and he has spoken highly of Foden in the past. If the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year winner for 2017 can get a few chances in the first-team next season, he is sure to take them and press on.

Andreas Pereira

Manchester United

Age: 22
Nationality: Brazilian
Position(s): Midfielder

At 22-years-old, Andreas Pereira is another one that falls into the ‘now or never’ category. However, following on from strong loan spells at Granada and Valencia in Spain, the Brazilian-born playmaker has enjoyed a very successful pre-season with Manchester United.

Pereira scored a wonderful free-kick in Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in the International Champions Cup and has put in a string of impressive performances that have caught the eye.

Sean Longstaff

Newcastle United

Age: 20
Nationality: English
Position(s): Midfielder

20-year-old midfielder, Sean Longstaff, is yet to make his Newcastle debut and looked set to join Portsmouth on loan for the upcoming season.

However, Longstaff has featured heavily for Newcastle in pre-season and even scored against Irish side, St Patrick’s Athletic. He has impressed so-much-so that Rafa Benitez himself block Longstaff’s loan move to Portsmouth so that he could provide competition for Ayoze Perez in Newcastle’s creative role.

Angus Gunn

Southampton

Age: 22
Nationality: English
Position(s): Goalkeeper

Despite being Norwich No.1 in the Championship last season, Gunn may finally be given the chance to make himself a household name. A feature of Man City and England’s youth sides, he has been on the cusp of a breakthrough for quite some time.

Southampton parted with £13.5m to bring the 21-year-old to St. Mary’s which suggests he will be Mark Hughes’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Tottenham Hotspur

Age: 20
Nationality: American
Position(s): Centre-back

Carter-Vickers has been at Spurs since the age of 11 but is yet to fully earn the trust of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Some promising displays during pre-season mean that, combined with Spurs lack of transfer activity, the Southend-born defender may be given more first-team responsibilities. Turning 21 in December, exposure to elite competition could fast-track his development and prove no new signings were needed.

Isaac Success

Watford

Age: 22
Nationality: Nigerian
Position(s): Forward

The £12.5m that Watford paid Granada for Isaac Success in 2016 was, at the time, a club-record fee.

It hasn’t quite gone to plan for Success since – just one goal in 19 games in his first season and loaned out to Malaga last season where he managed just one assist in nine appearances as the Boquerones were relegated from La Liga.

However, Success has been much more involved in this pre-season for Watford and, with the departure of Richarlison to Everton, should get plenty of chances to prove himself this season.

Domingos Quina

West Ham United

Age: 18
Nationality: Portuguese
Position(s): Centre-midfielder

Recently crowned U-19 European Champion with Portugal, Quina impressed so much in his dynamic midfield role that Barcelona are reportedly interested in the Hammers’ teenager.

Pellegrini may find it difficult to provide opportunities to start given the influx of signings this summer, however, the club risk losing an exciting talent to a bigger club if he doesn’t. Should Quina get the chance to replicate his form from Finland, the West Ham faithful could be in for a treat.

Ruben Vinagre

Wolves

Age: 19
Nationality: Portuguese
Position(s): Left wing-back

Another member of Portugal’s triumphant U-19 squad, Wolves decided to make Vinagre’s initial loan deal permanent before he joined up with Quina for the European Championships.

With Barry Douglas completing a move to Leeds despite topping the club’s assist charts in the Championship-winning campaign, the left-wing-back spot has opened up and the Portuguese teenager could be the ideal player to fill it.
