Lyon manager admits Nabil Fekir has been affected after transfer to Liverpool collapsed

Lyon boss Bruno Génésio has revealed team skipper and star midfielder Nabil Fekir has been affected by his failed move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old Frenchman was set to become the Red’s second major acquisition this summer but concerns regarding his overall fitness, relating to a serious knee injury he sustained three years ago, saw the powers that be at Anfield, despite a fee and personal terms being agreed, pull the plug.

Fekir, part of Didier Deschamps World Cup-winning squad, remains at his boyhood club but Génésio has revealed the failed transfer still plays on his mind.

“It is never easy accepting this kind of situation, when you are very near to signing for a club where you want to go,” he told reporters (via Sky Sports).

“Where you want to reach another level and to give a boost to your career.

“But as I said, it could have been worse for him. He is at Lyon, at a strong club, he is captain of a team who plays in the Champions League.

“This could be a very important season for Nabil. I haven’t seen any attitudes or signs that make me think he won’t live up to his role the way he did last year.”

Fekir really came into his own last season, bagging 23 goals across 40 matches in all competitions as well as creating a further eight for his teammates, earning him a regular presence with the French national team plus interest from a number of powerful European clubs most notably Liverpool.

Yet to feature for Les Gones this season he’s expected to win cap number 155 when Strasbourg visit Lyon on Friday evening.
