Patrick Kluivert backs son Justin’s decision to avoid Man Utd

Patrick Kluivert believes his son made the correct decision to join Roma instead of Manchester United.

The legendary striker wanted his son to remain at Ajax for another season but says he fully backs his move to the Italian capital.

The 19-year-old put in some excellent displays for the Amsterdam club over the last two seasons, attracting interest from some of Europe’s top sides.

Despite being linked to power house clubs like Barcelona and Manchester United, the Dutch starlet chose to head to Serie A and join the Giallorossi.

He got off to a bright start, setting up Edin Dzeko’s goal in the 1-0 win over Torino in the opening weekend of the season.

And despite being linked to Manchester United, Kluivert Snr believes Justin is better off playing for Roma.

“I’m very satisfied with what he is doing,” Kluivert told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “He doesn’t speak much, but he is someone who knows how to listen and is motivated, I would have liked to stay in Ajax for another year, but he chose for himself. I think Roma is a good solution.

“A jump to the Premier League would have been difficult… I think United would have been too big a jump. Roma is an important club, but the pressures are lower.

“Roma must not win by force and it is a club that is used to good football. It is the ideal place for Justin right now. Then, who doesn’t dream of Barcelona? But Italian football is catching up and Justin can take advantage of it.”

After finishing third last season, 18 points behind champions Juventus, Roma have rebuilt over the summer with Radja Nainggolan and Alisson moving on. Eusebio Di Francesco has brought in a dozen players while just missing out on Brazilian winger Malcom, who had a last minute change of heart and joined Barcelona instead.

Patrick Kluivert, who has just taken over as Clarence Seedorf’s assistant manager at Cameroon, thinks that Roma have a good chance this season, even if they are not favourites.

“I hope he can win the Scudetto. Juve are the strongest, but you never know,” he added. “I would like to go to Italy soon. I’m busy with the new job, but for Justin I always have time. I want to see him win with Roma. And I want to see him happy.”

Roma have the chance to make it two wins from two when they take on Atalanta on Monday.
