Paul Pogba blames attitude problems for defeat to Brighton – including his own

Manchester United captain Paul Pogba says he and his teammates were not angry enough during their 3-2 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

Pogba was given the armband for the second time in two games in the absence of Antonio Valencia, who is still nursing an injury picked up in pre-season.

The France international did not put in the commanding performance he did in United’s first game and looked lackadaisical in central midfield.

United’s centre-backs Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof were robustly criticised following United’s defeat, but the whole team looked incompetent at times with the number of long balls punted up the field, aimed at nobody in particular.

However, Pogba, who had an enormously successful World Cup winning campaign with France, did have the grace to highlight himself for criticism in a post-match interview with Sky Sports.

“We lost, we lost in the attitude that we had today, I don’t think we deserved to win,” Pogba said. “The hardest game to play, playing maybe against a smaller club than Manchester United.

“But the attitude that we had is not like we wanted to be, they had more anger than us and I think they showed it on the pitch.

“I put myself first, that my attitude wasn’t right enough, we keep trying and keep pushing but it’s a big lesson for us.”

United are already at a disadvantage in the race for the title and, even though it’s still early days, their rivals in Eastlands and Anfield don’t seem to have missed a beat.

United will be back in action in a week when they host Spurs at Old Trafford on Monday.
