Unai Emery hints at plans to play the partnership every Arsenal wants to see

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has hinted that he may start playing both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette alongside each other in the Gunners starting XI

Emery joined the north London club after former manager Arsene Wenger left at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, ending his 22-year tenure.

Since then, Emery has made a host of experienced signings which he has slowly tried to gel into an already youthful and talented Arsenal squad.

However, the Gunners have lost both of their opening league fixtures – admittedly against tough opposition in Manchester City and Chelsea – leaving Emery’s side without a Premier League point in this new season.

Regularly opting to field one out-and-out striker with two wingers and a playmaker, Emery has hinted that in the future he may bring both Aubameyang and Lacazette into a more central role and use both forwards in their primary positions. Both players have been utilised on the Arsenal wings since arriving at the club across the past year.

Speaking to reporters (via Goal) Emery said: “At the moment, I think we need to have the control with the possession, with the positioning on the pitch, with more players inside.

“But it is one possibility to continue our progress and in one moment to try also to play with two scorers. In the last match of the pre-season, against Lazio, I did it with [Alexandre] Lacazette and [Eddie] Nketiah.

“But also, this position also for the players, they know that in one moment we can do that. But at the moment, no.”

Arsenal fans call for Lacazette-Aubameyang partnership

The two players have had mixed fortunes in their time at Arsenal since their introduction to Premier League football.

Lacazette arrived from Ligue 1 after leaving Olympique Lyonnais and after a decent goalscoring start for the Gunners last season his form has stalled somewhat, so far scoring 17 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.

In contrast, Aubameyang has had a slightly more productive start to life in London after his big money move from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window earlier this year.

In just 16 appearances in all competitions, the 29-year-old has scored 10 goals, averaging a goal every 0.63 games.

Arsenal fans have wanted to see the two experienced and talented goalscorers leading the line in the starting XI and if results continue to go the way they are, Emery may tinker his tactics sooner rather than later and play both stars up top in a bid to turn their fortunes around.
