Arturo Vidal has taken a swipe at Real Madrid, claiming that Bayern Munich would have two more Champions League trophies if VAR had been in use.
The Chile international swapped Munich for Barcelona in the summer window and he has wasted no time in taking aim at his new club’s fiercest rivals in La Liga.
In the last two Champions League competitions Vidal suffered two defeats with Bayern against Real Madrid in the knockout stages.
Bayern bemoaned their quarter-final second leg defeat in April 2017. That clash progressed to extra time with the scores level at 1-2 to Bayern (3-3 on aggregate). Then two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo in the first period of extra time and another from Marco Asensio sent Bayern crashing out of the tournament.
Ronaldo’s second goal was scored from an off-side position, which is something Vidal believes would have turned the tide in Bayern’s favour, despite them losing 6-3 on aggregate.
Bayern fans were also upset about a penalty decision from last season’s semi-final. If VAR had been available these decisions would’ve turned out differently says Vidal.
“With VAR, Bayern would have had two more Champions League titles and Real Madrid two fewer,” Vidal said (via AS).
“I want to win everything,” he added. “My favourite title is the Champions League.”
Real Madrid have won four out of the last five Champions League competitions, while Bayern haven’t clinched the trophy since the 2012/13 season.
Vidal and Barcelona will be back in action against Huesca next Sunday.
