Brighton sign Champions League winner Martín Montoya from Valencia

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Spanish defender Martín Montoya a four-year deal from Valencia.

The 27-year-old right-back ends a two-year association with the La Liga club after relocating to the Falmer Stadium for an undisclosed fee.

Montoya, who reunites with former Los Che teammate Mat Ryan, joins a Brighton side aiming to establish themselves as Premier League mainstays and Seagulls boss Chris Hughton believes his acquisition goes a long way to fulfilling that goal.

“Martin’s pedigree is excellent, and I’m delighted we have been able to add a player of his standing to our squad. There is no doubt he will improve our options in the right-back position,” he told the club website.

“He’s won several domestic and European honours in Spain, and played the majority of his career in the top level of La Liga. He has a wealth of experience, at 27 years old he is a very good age, and I’m now looking forward to working with him.”

The story so far

Montoya, a graduate of Barcelona’s world famous La Masia academy, would make his senior debut under then boss Pep Guardiola in February 2011

He’d ultimately feature in no fewer than 67 matches for the Catalan giants, lifting three league titles as well as one European Cup, and subsequently created 12 goals and scoring twice himself.

After it became clear opportunities were few and far between at the Camp Nou he completed a permanent move to Valencia in 2016.

Across the past two season Montoya played 62 times for Los Che and would score the same amount of goals from his Barça days.

Brighton start their Premier League away to Watford on August 11.
