“David Silva does not allow opponents to mark him” – Mick McCarthy

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Mick McCarthy have praised Manchester City  midfielder David Silva‘s on his clever play.

David Silva’s life off the pitch dominated the headlines focused on the player last season due to the premature birth of his son.

With his son at full health, this season the media’s attention has returned to the Spaniard’s extraordinary abilities as a footballer. Silva is renowned for his spatial awareness, excellent judgement and incisiveness with the ball.

The 32-year-old’s abilities have not been lost on pundits Jamie Carragher and Mick McCarthy who lauded the player’s skill in keeping the ball, during Sky Sports’ half time match coverage of Wolves vs Man City.

“There was very few players when I first started in the game who could take the ball when they were being marked,” Carragher said.

“He’s the type of player you can give it to him and you know even if there’s a man on him, he will not do nothing stupid he will keep the ball and do something clever.”

Mick McCaarthy echoed Carragher’s praise and lauded the Spaniard’s ability to find space on the pitch.

“I don’t think he allows you to mark him though, that’s the ability, that’s the cleverness of the players that find find space and pick up positions that you actually don’t want to go to,” McCarthy said.

“He gets into those positions but then he’s comfortable when you give him the ball, he’s just got that wonderful ability.”

Silva, who can play in any position across the midfield and behind the striker, arrived at the Etihad in 2011 from Valencia. The Spain international has gone on to make 347 appearances for the Citizens, scoring 62 goals across all competitions.

The 32-year-old’s contract at City runs until the end of the 2020 season, but the midfielder has yet to confirm if he will sign another one after that, and has even pondered retiring all together when the current one runs out.
