Fantasy Football Tips: Three forwards to pick, and three to avoid

The new Premier League season kicks off with Manchester United v Leicester City on Friday need, leaving Fantasy Football players up and down the country scrambling to finalise their teams.

With so much focus in this summer’s transfer window on the big money paid for goalkeepers, some of the focus may have been taken off those who normally grab the headlines further up the pitch.

However, the Premier League has a host of lethal forwards that are ready to reclaim the limelight and Squawka have prepared some Fantasy Football tips, with three must-pick forwards – as well as three to avoid.

Squawka’s forward Fantasy Football tips – the three to pick

Joshua King (Bournemouth)

Value: £6.5m

Price range: ££

Points in 2017-18: 110

Why?  Josh King’s 2017-18 campaign wasn’t quite the blistering one of the year before when the Norwegian international bagged 16 Premier League goals.

However, the former Manchester United man was still involved in more goals than any other Bournemouth player last season with eight goals and three assists.

This saw him tally up 110 Fantasy Football points and, with him being such a key part of Eddie Howe’s squad, he is likely to start most games for the Cherries this season.

The price of £6.5m represents good value for a player who is going to be an attacking focal point this season.

Cenk Tosun (Everton)

Value: £7m

Price range: £££

Points in 2017-18: 55

Why?  Following his £27m move from Besiktas in January, Cenk Tosun initially struggled to make an impact on the Everton side.

However, once he settled, he really started to make his mark.

Five goals in 12 starts in Tosun’s first few months in English football is very respectable and the Turkish international has unerring accuracy in one-on-one situations.

Tosun is Everton’s standout choice up top for Everton and, with the likes of Richarlison, Bernard, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Theo Walcott there to supply to bullets, should fire plenty of goals for the Toffees this season – a £7m price tag would leave plenty of funds free to strengthen in other areas.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Value: £11m

Price range: £££££

Points in 2017-18: 87

Why?  Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been one of the most lethal strikers around Europe over the past few years and, with 10 goals in 13 Premier League games, his start to life in English football at the end of last season shows he is ready to do the business for Arsenal, too.

Aubameyang has formed a strong strike partnership with Alexandre Lacazette over pre-season, as well as late last season, and that, along with the service provided by Mesut Ozil, could see the Gabonese forward rack up another impressive tally this season.

At £11m, Aubameyang is one of the most expensive players in this year’s Fantasy Football. However, every side needs a reliable, top-class goalscorer and he is just that.

…and three to avoid

Harry Kane

Value: £12.5m

Price range: £££££

Points in 2017-18

Why?  It is important to stress before the collective losing of minds sends shockwaves throughout the nation that this is a short-term suggestion to avoid.

Harry Kane has the curiously poor record of having never scored in August so far. If you couple that with the fact that he will be struggling for fitness in the early part of the season after reaching the semi-final of the World Cup with England, it might be best to avoid splashing out £12.5m on Kane straight away.

September might be the best time to throw in the two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner.

Glenn Murray

Value: £6.5m

Price range: ££

Points in 2017-18: 111

Glenn Murray surprised many last season by firing 12 goals in 35  league games for the Seagulls.

However, the former Crystal Palace man is now 34 years old and is sure to lose his edge soon.

And, despite Brighton looking relatively comfortable in avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season, they are expected to find it much tougher this season with the likes of Wolves and Fulham looking very strong after their promotions.

The £6.5m saved on Murray could be put to much better use in other areas of the pitch.

Gabriel Jesus

Value: £10.5m

Price range: £££££

Points in 2017-18: 126

Thirteen goals in 29 Premier League games last season makes Gabriel Jesus a controversial choice for the ‘avoid’ section.

However, following a very poor performance at the 2018 World Cup with Brazil, where he failed to score a single goal, the young forward must be worried about his starting chance this season. Sergio Aguero also looked very sharp as he scored both goals in Man City’s 2-0 Community Shield win over Chelsea on Sunday.

Jesus is tactically better suited to Guardiola’s system, but Aguero has a habit of making himself very difficult to drop. Primarily through scoring lots and lots of goals, as his record of 21 Premier League goals last season – more than any City player – attests.

So there’s a chance Jesus’ main chances to shine this season could again come in cup and European competition and, with the likes of Roberto Firmino, Alexandre Lacazette and Jamie Vardy all likely starters at cheaper prices, this could be seen as £10.5m wasted on a player who could become hamstrung by a squad rotation policy.
