Henderson will be given a chance to start against West Ham

Jurgen Klopp will give Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson every chance to feature in their Premier League opener against West Ham.

The Reds welcome Manuel Pellegrini’s men to Anfield on August 12 which comes three weeks after the culmination of this summer’s World Cup finals.

Henderson, an ever-present for England as they reached the semi-finals, only returned to pre-season training last Sunday – and subsequently played 20 minutes in their 3-1 friendly win over Torino a few days later – but such is his fitness level, which has impressed Klopp, he’s not ruling out starting him against the Hammers.

“We have to see how he reacts. But it is Hendo, so to be honest in the first session it looked like he trained for the whole three weeks,” he told the club website.

“He’s experienced enough not to bring himself in difficult situations where he has to run two or three miles in two minutes. I have no clue what we will do at the weekend.”

This forthcoming season will be Henderson’s eighth at Anfield following his transfer from boyhood club Sunderland in 2011. To date, he’s made 280 appearances for the Merseysiders scoring 24 goals and creating a further 40.

The departure of club legend Steven Gerrard at the end of the 2014/15 campaign saw former boss Brendan Rodgers hand him the captain’s armband, though he’s yet to lift a piece of silverware as skipper.

At international level, England’s semi-final loss to Croatia was his 44th appearance for the Three Lions, having made his debut back in November 2010 against France.
