“I expected them to play much quicker… like Liverpool” | Squawka Football

Brighton’s new signing Leon Balogun has said his teammates warned him about Manchester United’s ‘slow’ brand of football.

Balogun joined the Seagulls on a free transfer from German Bundesliga club Mainz in the summer and, despite the heads up from his teammates, the Nigerian admitted he was still surprised by how slow the Red Devils were in his Premier League debut.

He told The Guardian: “Some of the lads have just asked me that too and I said I had expected the Premier League to be quicker, but they told me this is always the kind of game you play against United.

“They like to slow it down a little bit sometimes.”

However, Balogun is not letting his first experience of English football cloud his judgement and knows that his side will face a very different, faster challenge when they come up against Liverpool on Saturday.

Balogun’s time at Mainz didn’t coincide with Jurgen Klopp’s managerial reign at the club, but Balogun has plenty of experience playing against the German manager’s old Dortmund side.

The 22-time Nigerian international added: “Liverpool is going to be completely different. I know how [Jürgen] Klopp likes to play. It’s going to be a lot quicker and a lot more intense.”

Brighton head into Saturday’s fixture with three points from their opening two games, while Liverpool have won both of their games so far without conceding a goal.
