“I’m shocked he is still at Arsenal” | Squawka Football

Paul Merson has said he is shocked Aaron Ramsey is still an Arsenal player with the midfielder’s contract set to expire at the end of the current season.

Ramsey, who has made 331 appearances for Arsenal since joining the club from Cardiff City in the summer of 2008, is reportedly having doubts about committing his future to the Gunners – with reports claiming Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in him.

The Wales international was left out of Arsenal’s line-up for Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge and will be allowed to speak to other clubs in January, should he not sign a new contract before then.

There is also still a possibility Ramsey will leave for a foreign club before a number of European transfer deadlines closes on August 31st.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Arsenal striker Merson admitted he is surprised with Ramsey’s situation.

“I am shocked he is still there,” Merson said (via Goal). “He should just sign [a new contract] now. I thought Chelsea might come in for him. It is a massive football club.

“He plays every week for Arsenal. He could go elsewhere and might play 15 games. Arsenal can’t afford to lose him.

“He is their best finisher out of the midfield players they’ve got. He usually gets into double figures. If they get rid of him they have to replace him.”

Ramsey has scored a total of 58 goals across all competitions for the Gunners, including 11 in 2017/18.

Last campaign was the first time the Welshman had reached double figures since the 2014/15 season. Directly involved in 20 goals overall, only Alexandre Lacazette – who scored 17 goals and provided four assists – could better Ramsey’s total contribution to the team.

The 27-year-old has won three FA Cups with the Londoners, famously scoring the winner in both the 2014 final against Hull and against in 2017 against Chelsea.

Arsenal face West Ham United at the Emirates in their next Premier League game after losing their opening two matches against Manchester City and Chelsea respectively.
