Jose Mourinho is not to blame for Paul Pogba form, says Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney says that Paul Pogba is a “fantastic player” but has to take responsibility for his poor performances.

Although Pogba had an improved season in 2017/18 – statistically at least – the midfielder was far from consistent and was dropped from the side on several occasions by Jose Mourinho.

The France international had a wonderful World Cup, but back at club level he seems to have fallen into the same inconsistent pattern with a good performance in United’s opening game, against Leicester City, followed by a poor game in United’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton.

Rooney left Manchester United for Everton as the club’s all-time leading goal scorer last summer, and the former England captain is now plying his trade in the MLS with DC United, where he has already made a significant impact on his new club’s fortunes, scoring three goals in seven games and showing flashes of genius reminiscent of his youth.

His success in the United States hasn’t stopped the former England skipper from casting a critical eye over his former stomping ground, and he believes that the responsibility for Pogba’s improvement does not fall onto the shoulders of United’s manager, but Pogba himself.

“He is a fantastic player but he has to do it for himself,” United’s all-time record goalscorer and current D.C. United forward told CNN World Sport.

“If they’re going to win the title, he’ll be the main player in terms of them doing that.

“You hear a lot of people saying Jose Mourinho needs to get the best out of him but he needs to do it for himself and prove he’s at that level to help Man United.”

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Monday night against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Victory will provide the Red Devils with a real chance to bounce back now that Manchester City have dropped points on the road against Wolves.
