Michael Keane suffers small hairline fracture after clash of heads v Bournemouth

Everton have confirmed that defender Michael Keane will be out for “three to four weeks” after suffering a hairline skull fracture against Bournemouth yesterday.

The 25-year-old England international suffered the injury when he and teammate Idrissa Gueye were defending a cross and clashed heads in a sickening blow.

Gueye was able to continue playing but Keane came off much worse and was carried off on a stretcher with an Oxygen mask on his face.

The club confirmed the extent of the injury this morning in a statement on their official website that read: “Michael Keane has sustained a small hairline fracture of the skull but suffered no other complications following a clash of heads in the game against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

“The 25-year-old defender will be unable to engage in head contact for between three and four weeks, from which point he will be able to resume full training.”

Keane looked like he had sealed an impressive away win for Everton yesterday, making it 2-0 with his first Premier League goal for the club, but Bournemouth fought back to make it 2-2 with both sides having a man sent off.

And the England international, who was immediately admitted to Poole Hospital, added to the statement, saying: “Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes and support.

“I’m okay but suffered a small hairline fracture of the skull which will heal itself and means I won’t be able to have any head contact for three to four weeks.

“I will be back with my team and back on the pitch as soon as I can after that.

“I also want to say a huge thank you to the medical staff at Everton and Bournemouth as well as all those at Poole Hospital for their excellent treatment and care.

“I was so happy to get my first Premier League goal for Everton, I’m just gutted we didn’t take the three points, but we keep our unbeaten start going.”

Following the news of his injury, Keane’s former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand also sent a message of support via his Twitter account.

Yesterday’s draw with Bournemouth leaves Everton on five points from their opening three games and means Marco Silva is still unbeaten in competitive games with the Toffees.

They will have the chance to extend that run when they face Huddersfield at Goodison Park next week, following a home tie against Rotherham in the League Cup on Wednesday.
