Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis digs out trophyless Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri

Napoli President, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has taken yet another shot at former manager Maurizio Sarri, this time for having “not won anything”.

Despite a series of impressive league runs, including finishing second in Serie A, four points behind winners Juventus, in the 2017/18 season, the Italian has yet to win a trophy in his managerial career.

“There remains the pleasure of having played well but also the bitterness of not having won anything,” said the 69-year-old president and film producer (via Goal).

“We gave Sarri everything and in three years we didn’t win anything.”

Responding to these comments, Sarri told reporters (via Guardian): “I don’t know but maybe he is talking about me because he is missing me.

“We didn’t win in Naples but we had the record number of points for the club.

“We qualified three times for the Champions League and it was unusual for Napoli. So I think we did very well. Nobody won in Italy except Juventus in the last seven years.”

While it is true the club did not win a trophy during this time, the club did finish second twice, and were “Winter Champions” (Campioni d’Inverno) in both the 2015/16 and 16/17 seasons when they finished the first half of the season at the top of the table.

It is also worth noting Sarri’s time in Italy coincided with a dominant Juventus team, who have won seven consecutive Serie A titles, as well as four consecutive Coppa Italia crowns.

Following a drawn-out summer departure from former club Napoli, this is not the first time the current Chelsea boss has been the focus of the president’s ire.

Earlier this summer, Laurentiis accused Sarri of wanting “to take my whole team to England” (via bbcsport) when he finally departed the Italian club, although only Jorginho eventually followed Sarri to London.

Chelsea make the trip to Newcastle on Sunday, where they have not won since December 2011. It will also see Sarri face off with his Napoli predecessor, Rafa Benitez, who was interim Chelsea manager, where he won the Europa League in the 2012/13 season.
