Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hit out at the English media for their scathing reports of the club last season.
The Red Devils finished second in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final, which they lost to Mourinho’s former club Chelsea.
Despite this, many believe United did not have a good season having also been knocked out of the Champions League to a Sevilla side lacking form in the round-of-16 and the Carabao Cup to Championship side Bristol City among other poor results.
But Mourinho believes he and his club have been unfairly treated, hinting at the positive comments to have been made about Liverpool as a comparison.
“It is difficult for me to believe that we finished second,” Mourinho told a press conference ahead of the Leicester game on Friday evening.
“When I listen, when I read, not much but sometimes I do, it’s difficult to believe that we finished second because you [the media] are capable of making people finish second look like they were relegated and you’re capable of making people who win nothing and finish below us look like serial winners…
“Sometimes it’s difficult to believe – I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues, but I keep saying, thinking and feeling that the second position last season was one of my biggest achievements in the game.”
Mourinho also cleared up his comments about the calibre of United players in preseason, some of which drew criticism.
He added: “The target is the Leicester match and the tactics to be changed – in Championship Manager you can just press a button. In football, you need time to work and you need players on the pitch to work with which we didn’t have until now.
“I said that during pre-season – it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, it looked like I was saying something crazy – but I repeat, pre-season is difficult when you don’t have your players to work with. It’s as simple as that.”
Manchester United v Liverpool – how they compared last season
Both Liverpool and Manchester United finished last season without silverware despite both reaching the final of a competition.
Liverpool were runners-up in the Champions League, losing 3-1 to Real Madrid – with United dropping out at the round-of-16.
As United lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea, 1-0, Liverpool had only managed to reach the fourth round losing 3-2 to West Bromwich Albion.
In the League Cup, Liverpool went out in the third round losing 2-0 to Leicester City while United reached the quarter-finals before losing 2-1 to Bristol City.
United also finished higher in the Premier League, second to Liverpool’s fourth, five points ahead of their bitter rivals.
