Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has commented on his different role under new manager Maurizio Sarri after the Blues defeated Huddersfield Town 3-0 at the weekend.
Kante scored Chelsea’s opener before a penalty from new-signing Jorginho and a Pedro strike ensured Sarri’s men would start the season with three points and a clean sheet.
With former manager Antonio Conte leaving the Stamford Bridge club, the ex-Napoli coach has adjusted the Chelsea set-up to meet his own expectations, moving from Conte’s favoured 5-3-2 formation to a more traditional 4-3-3.
With Jorginho utilised as the orchestrator at the base of Chelsea’s midfield, Kante was given the freedom to venture further forward which culminated in a goal for the French World Cup winner after only 34 minutes.
Speaking to reporters after the victory, Kante discussed his new role under Sarri and reiterated the importance of starting the season strong with the west London side.
Kante said: “It’s a new manager and a new system. I played a little bit further forward. I need to adapt to this role but I will give my best in this position for the team and I hope we can keep doing good things in the future.
“I try to find the striker, to be more offensive and cause problems for the opponent and I think it went well. But we have to keep working hard in training and I hope in the next game against Arsenal we can get a good result.
“I think it was important to start very well and after the first two goals, we managed the game in the second half. It was a good victory and a very good start to the season.”
Kante’s goal against Huddersfield meant he has now scored in each of his four Premier League seasons. However, the Frenchman has never found the net more than once.
N'Golo Kanté has scored in each of his four Premier League seasons:
2015/16: 37 games, 1 goal
2016/17: 35 games, 1 goal
2017/18: 34 games, 1 goal
2018/19: 1 game, 1 goalAlready equalled his best single-season tally. pic.twitter.com/WPvreV8vjW

With a new role and a goal already, Kante should be expected to at least double his previous best… not that it would be difficult.
Chelsea’s next Premier League match is at home to Unai Emery’s Arsenal this Saturday.
