Swansea City assistant manager Billy Reid says Federico Fernandez is “likely” to join Newcastle United.
The 29-year-old Argentine central defender joined the Swans from Napoli in 2004 and had two years left on his present deal at the Liberty Stadium.
After suffering the ignominy of relegation from the Premier League last season a number of players have started to leave the Welsh club with Reid confirming Fernandez as the latest departee.
“Yes, Fede has been here through pre-season and was excellent on Saturday but he is a player who sees future elsewhere, it is not settled yet but it looks like he will go to Newcastle,” he told a press-conference (via Wales Online) ahead of their weekend clash against Preston North End.
Fede’s time in southern Wales
Since swapping Serie A for English football the native of Tres Algarrobos would go on to feature in no fewer than 128 matches for Swansea.
Across those outings, with 117 coming in the Premier League, he’d bag two goals and create a further four for his teammates whilst being sent off once.
Fernandez, meanwhile, has won 32 senior international matches with Argentina – but his last game came in October 2014 against Brazil.
If he does join the Magpies then Fernandez would become the fifth Argentine to represent Newcastle United after Christian Bassedas, Fabricio Coloccini, Daniel Cordone and Jonás Gutiérrez.
