Godin to Man Utd? Top five rumours as the Premier League transfer deadline nears

It is that time once again. It is officially transfer deadline day.

Managers up and down the country will be rushing to do their transfer business before the clock strikes 5 pm and the window closes for 2018.

As ever, there are lots of transfers taking place and even more rumours circulating regarding potential moves.

Here are the top five transfer rumours that have been circulating this morning.

1. Diego Godin rejects Manchester United

Atletico Madrid and Uruguay defender Godin was approached by Manchester United this morning as Jose Mourinho looks to add defensive stability to the squad. That is, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

However, it seems Godin wishes are to stay in Spain and continue his career at Atletico, pouring cold water over this red-hot rumour.

The 34-year-old centre-back impressed this summer with Uruguay in Russia at the World Cup. Last season, Godin was highly impressive as Atletico finished runners-up in La Liga.

Godin had an 87% pass success rate and aided the defensive line with his 59 interceptions and 20 blocks across the 17/18 campaign.

United’s pursuit of a defender is one of the worst kept secrets of the summer transfer window. In addition to Godin, Harry Maguire appears set to stick with Leicester City. “I can confirm he is going to Manchester…but only for a couple of hours with us,” joked Foxes manager Claude Puel at his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Old Trafford on Friday evening.

So the most likely rumour to develop into something more on deadline is the transfer of Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld to the Old Trafford club. Alderweireld has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at Spurs but is still valued highly by owner Daniel Levy and club boss Mauricio Pochettino.

2. Ousmane Dembélé to Arsenal?

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Arsenal throughout the summer, with a number of fans calling for Unai Emery to add a top class winger to his squad before the end of the transfer window.

In a late twist, Spanish journalist Kike Marin has reported that the Gunners have launched a €100m offer to Barcelona for Dembélé in the final hours of the transfer window.

BBC Sport have played down these rumours, but that’s not stopping the excitement amongst Arsenal’s fanbase.

There’s an increased level of competition for places in the attacking positions at Barcelona after the £36.5m signing of Malcom from Bordeaux last month.

Dembélé scored 4 goals in 23 appearances in his debut season at the Camp Nou, after arriving from Borussia Dortmund in a deal said to be worth up to £135.5m.

When asked about his future on Wednesday, the winger claimed that he was staying with the Spanish Champions for this season: “I’m staying at Barcelona, I’m ready to play the Super Cup.”

3. Watford set for another late Barcelona swoop?

Spanish winger Gerard Deulofeu joined Watford permanently from Barcelona in the summer, and late rumours suggest one of his former teammates could join him.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Deulofeu has been trying to convince Paca Alcacer to move to Vicarage Road. The agreement proposed to Barcelona by the Hornets is a two-year loan deal with a compulsory purchase clause after that period elapses. This one is maybe best taken with a pinch of salt, however, as Watford-based regionals are playing it down.

Alacer, a forward, scored 13 La Liga goals for Valencia the season before joining Barcelona. The most he has managed at the Camp Nou, however, is six.

4. Danny Drinkwater to Leicester City, West Ham United or Crystal Palace

The Chelsea midfielder only moved to the club from Leicester last season but failed to make an impact in his year at Stamford Bridge.

With Maurizio Sarri opting to bring in midfield reinforcements of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic from Napoli and Real Madrid respectively, Drinkwater’s short stint at the club could be coming to an end.

A loan move appears an option, with Drinkwater’s wages and Chelsea’s transfer demands most likely set too high at this stage of the window. Links to a move back to Leicester have been reported, with both West Ham and Crystal Palace interested in strengthening their squad with the experienced centre-midfielder.

Drinkwater only played in 12 Premier League matches last season but the former Premier League winner would be a valuable addition to any of the linked clubs squads, especially on a season-long loan deal.

5. Wolves aren’t done yet

during the FA Community Shield match between Manchester City and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on August 5, 2018 in London, England.

Premier League new boys Wolverhampton Wanderers have made six signings so far, with midfielder Leander Dendoncker becoming their latest acquisition.

A proposed move for Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko is said to have broken down, with the player preferring to fight for his place in Pep Guardiola’s squad for the time being.

But Wolves could still be active before today’s 5pm deadline. The Daily Mirror claim that Chelsea’s Victor Moses is on the clubs’ radar, whilst 19-year-old midfielder Joao Caiado is set to arrive from CD Tondela.

There could also be some outgoings for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side, with winger Ivan Cavaleiro reported to be on Newcastle’s radar.
