Former Manchester United full-back Phil Neville says that criticisms of Jose Mourinho’s methods have been disgraceful.
Man Utd face Spurs on Monday night after suffering a disappointing loss in their previous game against Brighton. A positive result is crucial for Mourinho, who has come under sustained criticism throughout the summer after failing to land key transfer targets.
United’s frailties in central defence were exposed for all to see against Brighton, with Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof invariably culpable for every one of the Seagulls’ three goals.
BBC MOTD of the day pundit Ian Wright said that the Portuguese tactician is becoming like Arsene Wenger, while former United midfielder Paul Ince questioned his transfer policies.
Neville, who was part of United’s famed ‘Class of 92,’ and spent 11 years at Old Trafford, was less than impressed with some of the criticism levelled at Mourinho.
“I think it’s disgusting,” he told BBC Radio Five Live .
“I read something the other day, that his methods are outdated and I think that’s the most disrespectful thing ever. How do these people know his methods are outdated when he comes back in a Manchester derby and wins 3-2 last year? Were his methods outdated in that? I think his record speaks for itself.
“They are going through a bad period, that performance at Brighton was unacceptable but I don’t see a better man for the job. In terms of his record since he’s gone to Manchester United, FA Cup win, Europa League win, two Carabao Cup win, two Champions League qualifications.
“Yes, I don’t think all is smooth there and I think it’s a club issue but I think that the criticism he’s getting, I just think it’s disgraceful, I really do.”
Is the criticism of Mourinho fair?

Manchester United fans have lamented the change of United’s style since Sir Alex departed the club in 2013. Under the direction of the imperious Scotsman, Manchester United were a side that played relentlessly attacking football, with pace and flair on both wings augmented by boundless creativity as well as brute force in midfield.
Under Mourinho, United have become a side more concerned with not losing rather than winning and have become more cautious as a result. To argue that this has been an abject failure is inaccurate as United have improved since Mourinho arrived at the club.
The Portuguese tactician guided United to a Europa League and League Cup title in his first season and took the club to second place in the league last season – the club’s highest league finish since Sir Alex retired.
Mourinho will have the opportunity to earn a break from the whirlwind of criticism when United play Spurs on Monday. If the Red Devils are defeated expect the calls for his sacking to intensify in the aftermath.
