Arsene Wenger reveals his three favourites to win World Cup 2018

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes either France, Brazil or England will win the World Cup this summer. 

Wenger, 68, further pointed to the fact that no nation with a population of under 40 million had won the competition since 1954, immediately ruling out Belgium, Croatia or Uruguay.

And while the veteran tactician has declared his clear favourites to clinch the prestigious trophy as his homeland France, he highlighted the threat of five-time winners Brazil and the Three Lions in their respective pursuits of World Cup glory.

“My heart favourite is of course France,” he told beIN Sports.

“I said many times that no country under 40million people has won the World Cup since 1954, since after the Second World War.

“But I ask you, can we get out Belgium who is a smaller country than 40m? I think they have the quality.

“Can we have a surprise with Croatia? They have the quality.

“But I would say at the moment England – nobody speaks about England but they are dangerous – Brazil or France.”

When further pushed to select just one team out of the three he chose, Wenger responded: “If I choose one it is France.”

The quadrennial tournament in Russia this summer has borne witness to the capitulation of world football’s perennial powerhouses as Germany, Spain and Argentina have all faltered en route to the quarter-finals.

Germany crashed out of the group stages after suffering defeats to Mexico and South Korea, while Spain fell short against hosts Russia, and Argentina were ravaged by a star-studded France side.

Meanwhile, England beat Colombia after a penalty shootout on Tuesday night at the Otkrytiye Arena, setting up a quarter-final against Sweden, while France and Brazil also made it through the round-of-16.

Les Bleus triumphed in the aforementioned win over Argentina, and Brazil edged past Mexico 2-0 at the Samara Arena.

Tite’s men now face Belgium on Friday, while France will entertain Uruguay on the same day.
