Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas believes the week before the transfer window shuts will be like a “storm” as Liverpool‘s pursuit of Nabil Fekir hangs in the balance.
Liverpool’s bid to bring Fekir to Merseyside looked all but complete during the early stages of the summer window, but following a collapse in negotiations the French winger has remained at the Groupama Stadium for the time being.
Since then Jurgen Klopp has continued to spend prodigiously in the market, signing Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri for £13m, as well as breaking the world-record transfer fee spent on a goalkeeper by recruiting Roma’s Alisson for £67m.
However, the German tactician is reportedly still keen on bringing the 25-year-old France international to Anfield, though Lyon chief Aulas has revealed he is not afraid of big clubs coming in and trying to poach his prized assets.
“I do not fear anything. If he leaves, then we will have received the fee we wanted, but we will do everything so that he does not leave,” he said at the club’s press conference.
“We will do everything we can to keep Fekir, but in the week before the end of the English market on August 9, it will be a bit of a storm.”
Aulas also lauded the reputation and size of Lyon, believing Fekir will struggle to find a club with Champions League football and the status of the Ligue 1 giants.
He added: “Lyon currently have the ambition to do something big this season, and so it will be difficult for Nabil to find a genuinely better club who also plays Champions League football.”
The Reds have been eager to recruit a marquee forward in an effort to replace Philippe Coutinho, who joined Barcelona for £142m back in January, and Fekir was earmarked as the ideal successor, though a deal has so far failed to transpire.
Despite this, the club have spent big this summer, with Fabinho and Naby Keita joining from Monaco and RB Leipzig respectively, while the aforementioned Alisson and Shaqiri have added further strength to an already impressive squad.
