Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticised manager Jose Mourinho for his style of play at the club, claiming Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola would not accept it.
United finished second in the Premier League last season but were 19 points behind Guardiola’s City, who broke numerous records on their way to the title, amassing 100 points in the process.
The season also brought the first time that Mourinho has failed to win a trophy in his second year at a club, having lost in the FA Cup final and bowing out of the Champions League as well as the Carabao Cup.
And Scholes was not impressed with the performances of his former side, or the mentality of the manager last season.
“He may be happy,” he told beIN SPORTS.
“It’s a team that grinds out results rather than really impress you. And that’s probably what he’s happy with, that’s where he’s been at his best over the years.
“If Guardiola was manager at Manchester United, he would hate what he was seeing and it would be different.
“But the most important thing to him, I think, is results – he’ll be judged on that. Last year was a disappointing year.
“You don’t have any divine right to win a trophy, I know that, but the way they performed in the league wasn’t really the standard required.
“They got beat by Sevilla in the Champions League which was really poor, Sevilla are a poor team. Yet they got to the final of the FA Cup.
“Every year when Manchester United don’t win something, it’s a disaster and that will carry on until he tries and wins the league.
“But there’s so many good teams now, it’s going to be difficult.”
Guardiola won the Premier League and League Cup in his second year at Manchester City, with his side topping the table with a record-breaking 100 points, having scored a record-breaking 106 goals and recording 32 wins – another record.
United’s disappointing year
After winning the League Cup and Europa League in his first season at United, many may have expected Mourinho to build on the cup successes and mount a serious challenge for trophies last term.
But despite losing the UEFA Super Cup to Real Madrid, United had a good start to the domestic campaign, winning six of their opening eight games (drawing two) and conceding just two goals.
Manchester United have lost to all three newly-promoted sides in a single Premier League season for the first time ever.

The Red Devils then lost to Huddersfield Town away, the first of three defeats to all the promoted sides, with United the only team to lose a Premier League game to all three promoted clubs last season.
United would go on to lose another six games in the Premier League, to add to their shock 2-1 defeat to Bristol City in the League Cup quarter-finals and poor Champions League showing.
United were perhaps given a favourable tie on paper, and Mourinho would have been happy with a 0-0 away draw in the first leg against Sevilla, but two away goals from Wissam Ben Yedder put United to the sword.
To cap off an indifferent season, United lost 1-0 to Mourinho’s old side Chelsea in the FA Cup final, marking a season without trophies.
