Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson hopes to emulate Mohamed Salah and turn his hefty fee into a bargain.
The 25-year-old Brazilian shot-stopper ended a two-year association with AS Roma in the summer by relocating to Anfield, a year after Salah made the same journey, for a reported initial fee of £56m.
It was a record fee paid for a goalkeeper which stood until Chelsea activated Kepa Arrizabalaga’s £71.6m buyout clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract and, despite no longer carrying that label, Alisson eventually wants the fee to become a footnote.
“Yes, it was a big deal for Roma, they had a record fee and they were happy,” he said (via The Mirror).
“And I’ll work very hard to make sure it’s a good deal for Liverpool too, which is more important.
“I know that Salah was [thought] a good deal for Roma, but now people say it is a good deal for Liverpool.
“I want to work hard to ensure that yes, people say they paid a [bargain] price for me too, eventually.”
From Novo Hamburgo to Liverpool: Alisson’s story
Since joining from boyhood club Internacional in 2016, the native of Novo Hamburgo bided his time before attaining Roma’s number one jersey. Once in possession, following Wojciech Szczesny’s move to Juventus, Alisson never looked back. He ultimately made 64 appearances across the past two seasons and kept 26 clean sheets in the process (40.6%).
In those outings, Alisson would ship in 66 goals (one every 87 minutes) or 1.03 per game. His performances attracted the attention of many, but in the end, Liverpool won his signature, making him the Reds’ fourth major arrival this summer following Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.
He’d make his official debut against West Ham in their 2018/19 Premier League opener. Alisson marked the occasion by keeping a clean sheet and producing two saves whilst registering a passing accuracy of 94% as Klopp’s side ran out 4-0 winners at Anfield.
Next up for Liverpool is a trip to Crystal Palace on August 20.
