Liverpool midfielder Fabinho says he was convinced to join the Reds by Manchester City‘s Bernardo Silva.
Fabinho arrived at Anfield this summer from Monaco along with other key signings Naby Keita, Alisson, and Xherdan Shaqiri.
The midfielder says he was torn between heading to La Liga and the Premier League, but was persuaded to move to Anfield because of the club’s prestigious reputation.
“When the opportunity came about to join Liverpool, I spoke to the coach and that gave me the certainty that it was the right decision which has been confirmed by being here,” he told Sky Sports.
“I’d been at Monaco for many years, and I believe it was time for a change. I wanted to move to a massive club with ambition that are fighting for titles. It was between the English league and the Spanish league
“This is a massive club, and if this is not the best league in the world, it’s one of the two biggest championships in the world.”
Fabinho added that he has been encouraged by the Red’s performances in pre-season which continued into their opening game of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign as they thrashed West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
“We are looking very strong. The preparations have been great and looking at all the elements, not just the first team, we have a great squad. We will be fighting for the title.”
Fabinho also revealed part of his decision to head to Merseyside was influenced by his friend Bernardo Silva: “He told me how much I would like Liverpool and how impressed he was by the way people here live, and breathe football.
“We were good friends at Monaco and he was one of the best players there. We had a real understanding, and I’m really happy for him that he won the title last season. I wish him plenty of individual success this season, but not the title!”
Fabinho had to watch his new club romp to victory from the bench in Sunday afternoon’s game against West Ham. A brace from Sadio Mane, plus goals from Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge helped the Reds record their 500th win in the Premier League, becoming only the fourth team to do so.
Liverpool will be back in action against Crystal Palace on Monday August 20.
