After struggling for form at Everton, Yannick Bolasie has completed a loan move to Championship side Aston Villa.
The Congo international arrived at Goodison Park in 2016 from Crystal Palace in a move worth £30 million, but poor form and fitness issues have stilted the 29-year-old winger’s progress.
Bolasie began his playing career with Rushden & Diamonds when he was 16. He worked his way up the lower tiers of English football and even spent a season with Floriana in the Maltese Premier League, before achieving his big break with Crystal Palace.
Bolasie helped the Eagles earn promotion to the Premier League in 2013 where he has plied his trade with Palace and Everton for the last six seasons.
However, following the arrival of Brazilians Richarlison and Bernard, the winger has fallen down the pecking order and will have to prove himself once again in the second tier with Aston Villa.
Bolasie seems excited by the challenge and is focused on helping Villa return to the Premier League.
“My main aim here is to get this club promoted,” he told Sky. “A club of this stature has to be in the Premier League.
I looked around both Villa Park and the training ground, and me and my family just said, ‘wow’. It’s Premier League everywhere you look.
“I’m here to make myself smile again and use all my ability to try and help the team. It’s great to be here.”
Aston Villa finished bottom of the Premier League at the end of the 2015/16 season, and have had mixed success in the Championship over the last two seasons.
Last season the Claret and Blue almost made it back to the Premier League but came up short against Fulham in the playoff final at Wembley.
Villa are preparing to redouble their efforts to make it back to the Premier League since going down two years ago, and have strengthened their squad over the summer. Along with Bolaise, they have also loaned Axel Tuannzebe from Manchester United, Anwar El Ghazi from Lille and have signed John McGinn for £3m from Hibernian.
The Villans have had a mediocre start to the campaign so far with two wins and two draws. They play Burton Albion in the League Cup on Tuesday.
