Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte has revealed he has no immediate plans to switch allegiances to the Spanish national team.
Laporte has captained France from under-17 to under-21 level, making 41 international appearances for the youth sides, but is yet to represent Les Bleus at senior level.
That is despite being called up for World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and the Netherlands two years ago – Didier Deschamps opted against using Laporte from the bench.
The centre-back joined Manchester City from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in January. He has played 16 games across all competitions for the champions so far and looks set to play a key role in Guardiola’s line-up this season.
But doubts remain over Laporte’s international future with Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claiming Spain manager Luis Enrique is considering calling up the 24-year-old for his Euro 2020 squad.
Laporte is of Basque descent and has strong ties with the region of Spain after spending eight years at Bilbao before his move to England.
After Manchester City’s 6-1 victory over Huddersfield Town on Sunday, Laporte was asked about the possibility of switching allegiances to Spain.
“Regarding the Spanish selection, for the moment, it is something that does not exist. I do not have the Spanish nationality,” Laporte told Carrusel Deportivo.
City have begun their season with two wins out of two and Laporte believes the champions must keep up their current form in order to retain the title.
He added: “We are happy with the beginning of the season, it is necessary to continue like this. The goal is to get better all the time and win the title. We have a lot of ambition.”
Next up for City and Laporte in the Premier League is a trip to newly-promoted Wolves this weekend.
