Jurgen Klopp has suggested the £75 million Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk was “too cheap” following the defender’s impressive start to his Anfield career.

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January for a reported £75m (via the BBC), making him the world’s most expensive defender.

The Dutchman has already helped the Reds to a Champions League final and a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League, emerging as one of the most highly-rated defenders in Europe in the process.

Following suggestions Liverpool had overpaid for Van Dijk, Klopp has now joked the Merseysiders’ £75m deal for the 27-year-old was a bargain.

Speaking to reporters after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Monday night, Klopp was full of praise for his leading centre-back.

“I don’t know a lot of defenders in the world that can defend Christian Benteke 100 per cent of the time, clearly without a foul,” Klopp said, according to Goal.

 

“It was very important that Virgil was there with that kind of presence. His performance was really, really good. It’s obvious.

“Quality costs a specific price. With cars, it’s the case, and with players too. Nobody thinks about it now.

“He’s a player in this market who is worth it, and maybe now people think he was too cheap! He loves playing with these boys, and that’s the most important thing.”

Van Dijk has made 24 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions since arriving at Anfield, scoring his only goal on his debut against Everton in the FA Cup.

Klopp’s men are the only Premier League side yet to concede a goal this season, and Van Dijk has been instrumental in Liverpool’s back-to-back clean sheets against West Ham United and Crystal Palace – he has won more headers (10) and made more clearances (11) than any other Liverpool player.

The Reds face Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield this weekend.
