FIFA have fined Atletico Madrid £41,224.60 for breaching third-party ownership rules when they signed Alessio Cerci from Torino in 2014.
The Italian was snapped up by the La Liga side for £14.34m, but he only stayed with the club for two seasons where he scored just one goal in 11 games; he currently plays for Ankaragucu in the Turkish top flight.
Cerci’s transfer breached 18b of the FIFA statutes on player transfers, which prohibits the involvement of third-party involvement in a players contract.
The regulation states: “No club shall enter into a contract which enables any other party to that contract or any third party to acquire the ability to influence in employment and transfer-related matters its independence, its policies or the performance of its teams”.
FIFA released a statement which confirmed the club had been fined for enabling a third party to influence their independence and for entering incorrect information into the International Transfer Matching System.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the club Atletico de Madrid, Spain, with a fine of CHF 52,500 and a warning for breaching art. 18bis of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players,” the governing body confirmed.
“The club was found to be liable for entering into a contract that enabled a third party to influence the club’s independence in employment and transfer-related matters and entering incorrect information in the International Transfer Matching System.”
Reports claim that the third party involved are Qatari-based fund. Several other clubs in Qatar, Dubai and Iran were sanctioned by FIFA under article 64 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code which enforced clubs to pay money owed to players, coaches and other staff.
