Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is “the wrong man for the job” and will not be at the club past Christmas, says former United midfielder Lee Sharpe.
Brighton piled the misery on the Red Devils with a 3-2 win against Mourinho’s side at The AMEX Stadium on Sunday. The 55-year-old is said to have been left extremely frustrated with the club’s reluctance to back him in the summer transfer window, leading to speculation that his time at the club may be coming to an end.
Zinedine Zidane has been linked with the top job at Old Trafford after his exit from Real Madrid this summer and Sharpe feels Mourinho is not the best man for the role.
“(Mourinho) is the wrong man for the job,” he told Sky Sports.
“When he came to Chelsea the first time he was quite charming and fun, but now he just seems dour and fed up.
“He’s moaned about not signing new players and not bigging up the ones he’s got.
“The football’s not entertaining and what makes it twice as bad is that their two biggest rivals, Man City and Liverpool, do play exciting football.
“His negative style does not fit in with the expansive football that United fans want. I think he’ll be gone before Christmas.”
Do United’s players enjoy playing for Mourinho?
United’s star-player Paul Pogba fuelled speculation that he may not be happy at Old Trafford with his comments following the club’s opening day victory against Leicester City, which has led to talk that the World Cup winner’s problem may be with Mourinho himself.
Sharpe says he’s been left disappointed by the way the former Chelsea boss has dealt with the likes of Pogba since he’s been at the club. He told Press Association Sport: “I do not think Mourinho has handled the Pogba situation very well.
“It was the same with Luke Shaw before that. Any views should be kept in-house and not appear in the press.
“Mourinho talks about class but that is the sign of class in my eyes.
“Every player who played for Sir Alex Ferguson – whether they liked him or not – respected him because you knew that any grievances would not be aired in the press.”
United take on Spurs next Monday at Old Trafford.
