Chelsea wonderkid Callum Hudson-Odoi enjoying Maurizio Sarri’s attacking football

Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi has expressed his enjoyment of playing under Maurizio Sarri.

The 17-year-old midfielder – a graduate of the club’s illustrious youth academy – is currently playing a prominent role under the Blues’ newly-appointed manager, as preparations for the new season are in full swing.

Sarri recently ended a three-year association with Napoli by relocating to Stamford Bridge, and he is running the rule of his new charges while implementing his footballing philosophy, which Hudson-Odoi feels suits him.

“The fact the manager is giving me the opportunity to play is really boosting my confidence so I just want to keep getting on the ball, pressing and working hard,” he told the club’s official website.

“The more games I play, hopefully, the more I will be able to impress him as well. Getting the opportunities is obviously a good thing so I just need to keep going. I’ve definitely liked working under Maurizio. The way he plays suits the way I play because I like to get on the ball a lot, go forward and keep attacking, I either stay in the pockets or stay wide.

“With the way the team are playing, being on the left wing is very good because you get to drive at the defenders one against one or cut inside and combine. You just play with a free mind and play how you can play, but also off the ball we press to try and win the ball high up the pitch, so we defend from the halfway line and obviously attack from there. I like playing under him.”

Nominally an attacking midfielder, Hudson-Odoi is capable of playing on both flanks if needed and, to date, he’s made no fewer than four senior appearances (totalling 80 minutes) for Chelsea – all coming under former boss Antonio Conte.

Of those matches played, two came in the Premier League, though they were both losing efforts: 0-3 at home to Bournemouth (25 minutes) and 1-3 against Tottenham Hotspur (two minutes).

Hudson-Odoi’s debut, though, came in their FA Cup win over Newcastle United (9 minutes) and it was in that competition against Hull City he spent his most minutes (45) on the pitch.

Chelsea face Arsenal in the International Champions Cup today in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium.
