Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma completes last-gasp deadline day loan move to Everton

Everton rounded off a remarkable end to their transfer window by making Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma their fourth signing of deadline day.

At around 5pm on Thursday evening, the Toffees submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League in order to give them extra time to wrap up the loan signing of Zouma.

Earlier in the day, the club completed three other deals which saw attacking midfielder Bernard sign as a free agent, with Yerry Mina and André Gomes becoming the second and third players to join the club from Barcelona this summer.

Bernard joins having spent the last five years with Shakhtar Donetsk, whilst the £28.5m arrival of Mina is seen as a coup, with Manchester United said to have been chasing him for much of the transfer window. Portugal international Gomes was desperate to leave Barcelona in search of first-team football.

A memorable summer window has seen Everton spend nearly £100m, with winger Richarlison becoming the clubs’ record signing in July and Lucas Digne arriving from Barcelona.

23-year-old Zouma spent last season on loan at Stoke City but was unable to save them from relegation. The defender has played twice for France’s senior team and was seen as a huge talent when Jose Mourinho brought him to Chelsea from Saint Étienne in 2014.

The deal sheet regarding Zouma’s move to Everton was one of ten different deals that the Premier League were processing after the 5pm deadline.

Will Zouma play first-team football at Everton?

Zouma looks set to compete with Mina, Michael Keane, Phil Jagielka, Mason Holgate and Matthew Pennington for the centre-back spots at Goodison Park. Ashley Williams, who made 34 appearances for the club last season, has joined Stoke City on loan.

Mina comes with a big reputation having only arrived at Barcelona in January. He was also the player that scored a dramatic late equaliser against England in the last 16 of the World Cup.

If Zouma can find the form that saw him regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young centre-back’s when he signed for Chelsea, then Marco Silva will be delighted with the defensive options at his disposal for this season.
