DONE DEAL: Sevilla have signed their Steven N’Zonzi replacement | Squawka Football

Sevilla have announced the signing of Maxime Gonalons on a season-long loan from AS Roma.

The 29-year French defensive midfielder goes in the opposite direction to compatriot Steven Nzonzi who became the giallorossi’s latest big summer acquisition.

Gonalons, a graduate of Lyon’s esteemed academy, is expected to fill the void left by Nzonzi.

A difficult season in Rome

Nominally a defensive midfielder, though capable of playing in central defence, Gonalons left France in the summer of 2017 having played 333 times for his boyhood club, registering 13 goals and 12 assists in the process.

During his final campaign the Vénissieux-born footballer played an instrumental role in Lyon reaching the Europa League semi-final, only to be dumped out by eventual runners-up Ajax.

He’d struggle for playing time under Eusebio Di Francesco last season, not helped by sustaining a serious calf injury, having made no fewer than 23 appearances in all competitions with 16 of those coming in Serie A.

Now the Frenchman becomes Sevilla’s eighth summer signing. The Spanish side are currently sit top of La Liga, albeit after having played one game.

Gonalons, who has earned eight international caps with France, could make his Sevilla debut in their Europa League play-off round clash away to Czech side Sigma Olomouc.

Sevilla take on Villareal away on August 26 in La Liga.
